A wise investor once told me, “There is no such thing as a tech company, you’re either leveraging technology or you’re heading towards your end-of-life.”

It all begins with a simple website. Your little slice of internet real estate. It can be simple as a single page resume, or as complex as one of the higher end blogs. It just has to be there. The marketing industry has changed drastically over the past decade or so. Word of mouth only gets you so far, and more and more people are getting rid of newspapers and television.  The internet is the new platform, and it’s here to stay for the foreseeable future.

You can be the greatest in the world at something, or have the solution to consumers problems, but if no one knows who you are then it’s all for nothing. This is where digital marketing comes into play. There’s dozens of options and strategies which incorporate different types of budgets and situations. The two primary methods involve either Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or Paid Advertising (PPC or Facebook Ads).

The problem is many people don’t know where to begin, or they are too focused and busy running their actual company to worry about advertising. Much like outsourcing your accounting, many companies outsource their marketing efforts. This is where consultants and agencies come into the picture.

There’s a bunch of numbers and statistics out there that show the value of investing in SEO and digital marketing. Generally, for every dollar spent you should reasonably expect a multiplier on. The hard part is that creating organic traffic can take time and is dependent on multiple factors. It can be as small and minute as web site quality, or more advanced and less straight forward things like keyword competition and location.

Anything is possible, you just have to be realistic. There are no guarantees in digital marketing, and if anyone can guarantee a first spot on Google it’s more than likely a scam. However, a top 10 spot within say, six months, could be realistic. I’ve cleaned up pages being ranked in the 100’s, and had them jump to less than 20 within a week. After that it just takes some fine tuning and re-evaluation to get a top 10 spot.

Digital marketing and Search Engine Optimization sometimes gets a bad rap. Much like cybersecurity and hacking, the marketing industry contains both White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO tactics. Google jail is definitely a thing and can have some serious long-term effects on your brand and your website domain. Buying quick and dirty backlinks from Fiverr or leveraging Private Blog Networks (PBN) may seem look a good quick win but they can actually do some serious damage to your reputation. Let’s be honest, Google and its Bots & Crawlers are pretty smart.

“The second page of Google is where websites go to die…”

Beginning any SEO or digital marketing campaign requires a lot of research and a solid strategy. A top-level consultant, marketer, or agency will always provide you with road map. It’s important to set realistic targets, benchmarks, and maintain communication in case a shift or pivot is required.

It’s cool to be first on Google for a product, service or post, but if it’s not converting into a sale then what’s the point? SEO can only get you so far, you can’t ignore the human factors.

SEO and Digital Marketing is composed of a lot of different factors that come together and demonstrate the value of your website or product to Google and end-users. I generally break it up into three different areas; on-page factors, off-page factors, and paid advertising. It’s always industry and client specific but most of the time I recommend focusing on the organic traffic & SEO, and then augmenting that with paid advertising campaigns.

The SEO & Digital Marketing Process

Initial Audit: Every client engagement I do begins with a full SEO audit. This acts as our baseline and helps us see where we’re at and where we can go. I use some advanced software’s and crawlers in order to give me all the information required to customize a game plan.

On-page & Global Factors: After the audit, I start taking on the technical problems associated with the client site. Most of these items and tasks are controllable so it’s important to clean them up and make the site lighter, cleaner, and more polished for search engine bots.

Custom Game Plan: After the sites been optimized, we can run reports to see if we’ve triggered any Google Search Changes. At this point we know what combination of strategies and tactics are better utilized for our situation. This can include things like content creation, social media management, ad campaigns, keywords, backlinking, and other higher-level SEO strategies. This is largely dependent on factors like competition, location, and current Google Algorithms.
